A Testimony Points People to Jesus Christ
Your story is not ultimately about you. It is about what the Lord has done for you.
A testimony can help someone understand that the Gospel is real, that salvation changes lives, and that Jesus Christ still saves sinners.
The goal is not to impress people with your past, but to direct attention to the mercy, grace, and saving power of Christ.

A Clear Testimony Has Three Parts
You do not need a dramatic background. You just need to explain clearly what Christ has done.
BEFORE CHRIST
What Was Your Condition?
Briefly explain what you believed, what you trusted in, or how you understood your need before salvation. Keep the focus on your need for Christ.
HOW YOU WERE SAVED
How Did You Trust Christ?
Explain how you heard or understood the Gospel, recognized your sin, and placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone.
AFTER SALVATION
What Has Christ Changed?
Share how your direction, desires, hope, understanding, or walk with God has changed since trusting Christ.
KEEP CHRIST CENTRAL
Your Story Should Lead to the Gospel
A testimony is most useful when it helps someone understand who Jesus Christ is and why they need Him.
Share your story, but do not stop with your experience. Explain the truth of sin, Christ's death and resurrection, salvation by grace, and the need for personal faith in Him.
Your testimony can open the door. The Word of God should explain the way of salvation.

WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE?
Helpful Parts of a Clear Testimony
Your Need
Explain that you were a sinner who needed forgiveness and could not save yourself.
The Gospel
Explain that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again.
Your Faith
Explain that you stopped trusting yourself or religion and trusted Christ alone.
A Scripture
Include one or two verses that clearly explain the Gospel or were meaningful in your salvation.
What Changed
Share honestly how Christ changed your direction, hope, priorities, or understanding.
An Invitation
Encourage the listener to consider their own relationship with Jesus Christ.
WHAT SHOULD I AVOID?
Keep the Testimony Clear and Christ-Honoring
A good testimony does not need to be dramatic, long, or filled with unnecessary detail.
Avoid glorifying past sin, speaking carelessly about other people, using confusing church terminology, or making your experience sound like the standard everyone else must match.
Every salvation story is different in circumstances, but the Saviour and the Gospel are the same.

Your testimony should leave people thinking more about Christ than about how interesting your past was.

Before:
“Before I trusted Christ, I...”
Gospel:
“I came to understand that I was a sinner
and that Jesus Christ died and rose again for me...”
Faith:
“I trusted Jesus Christ alone as my Saviour...”
Now:
“Since then, the Lord has...”
BE READY ANYWHERE
Learn to Tell It in About a Minute
Sometimes you will have thirty minutes. Sometimes you will have sixty seconds.
Learn a short version of your testimony that clearly explains your need, Christ's work, your faith in Him, and the difference He has made.
If the person is interested, you can then slow down, open the Bible, and explain the Gospel more fully.
WHO CAN I SHARE WITH?
Start with the People God Has Already Put Around You
Family
Share naturally with those who know you best.
Friends
Look for honest opportunities in normal conversation.
Coworkers
Live faithfully and be ready when spiritual questions arise.
Neighbors
Build real relationships and look for open doors to share Christ.
SHARE WITH THE CHURCH
Your Testimony Can Encourage Other Believers
Testimonies are not only useful for evangelism. They can strengthen the church family as well.
Hearing how God saved someone, answered prayer, brought a person through difficulty, or helped them grow can encourage others to trust Him.
